Week 9 Assignment

https://www1.cbn.com/cbnnews/entertainment/2021/october/comic-book-artist-quits-after-dc-announces-superman-will-be-lgbt   https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2021/10/admiral-rachel-levine-transgender-public-health/   The first article I have chosen for this assignment is from the far-right CBN News (Christian Broadcasting Network). This article is titled “Comic Book Artist Quits After DC Announces Superman Will Be LGBT” and discusses exactly what the title entails.  To begin, the first topic I will discuss in the article is the five criteria of journalistic content. Mechanically, the article is well written and has grammatical or spelling errors. That being said, the way that the story is structured leaves a lot to be desired. It begins by introducing the DC employee, and gives his reason for leaving the company, but does it out of context to the situation. This also affects the rhetorical criteria as it does not provide a clear basis for the argument that is being made. The mediat

Week 8 Newswriting

When I heard what the assignment for this week was, I was excited because my writing voice is something that I have given some thought to in the past. To describe my writing voice, I believe I must describe my background in writing.  In high school, I was taught to write a certain way. This is a problem that most people encounter in their writing career as they believe that there is a proper way to write. For my first three years of high school, I was a “terrible” writer because I did not follow these parameters. I constantly received bad grades on my writing because of this. I had one teacher, however, (history) that I never received a bad grade from (at least in writing). He was the type of guy that most students got along with. Toward the end of my junior year of high school, he had us do a research essay on any topic of our choosing. I am a huge basketball fan so I chose to do my essay on the rivalry between the Boston Celtics, and the LA Lakers. After I turned in my essay

Week 8 Journal

Fox News, The Washington Times, BBC News, ABC News, Buzzfeed News.  Do all the pieces fit?  Is the story an authentic telling of the events as they happened?  Can we verify the story?  Are we following the basics of communication?  Are we applying the proper techniques?  Is the story a fair and honest representation?  Fox News ( https://www.foxnews.com/politics/biden-speaks-event-us-capitol-honoring-law-enforcement-killed-line-duty ) This story talks about President Biden speaking at a memorial service to honor police officers that fell in the line of duty in 2019-2020. The points of interest in the story are in chronological order. The story is not opinion based and merely gives a description of the events that happened, and a few quotations regarding what president Biden said in his speech to the families in attendance. The article was written by Adam Shaw, a journalist for Fox News, and BBC News. The article is easy to read, and informative. The story also feels normal, and proper

Week 7 Newswriting

Minnesota Vikings vs. Detroit Lions  The Minnesota Vikings narrowly defeated the Lions today with the final score being 17-19 at home. To Vikings fans, however, this game could almost be considered a loss. As the Vikings improve their overall season record to 2-3, they leave a lot to be desired. With blunders such as 7 penalties for 74 yards, 2 turnovers, poor first-down efficiency, and a late fumble that allowed the Lions to take the lead, the win was sloppy. This raises the question of competence among the Vikings coaching staff. With three losses of less than one score this season, the Vikings appear to be a team that could easily make a playoff run this season. That being said, poor coaching decisions in the late game seem to be holding them back. On the other side of the ball, the Lions have fallen to 0-5, and remain as one of the two winless teams left this season. In the box score, the Lions have not played that bad this season, and to their credit, a few of their losses can be

Week 6 Newswriting

Tom Brady once said, “Every quarterback can throw a ball; every running back can run; every receiver is fast, but that mental toughness that you talk about translates into competitiveness.” Tonight the Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback passed NFL legend Drew Brees to become the all-time leading passer. Brady had achieved this accolade before when Brees was an active player but was passed for the lead for a record that seemed to be ever-changing. Tonight that race ended as Brees, who is now retired, was passed. Brady is the most accomplished quarterback of all time with 7 Super Bowl wins (NFL record), 10 Super Bowl Appearances (NFL Record), 5 Super Bowl MVPs (NFL record), Three NFL MVP awards (tied for NFL record), and his latest accolade, the all-time NFL passing leader. Brady looks to continue his success tonight with a win over his former team, the New England Patriots. Brady has 141 games at Gillette Stadium (home of the Patriots). The Buccaneers (2-1) are the defending Super Bow

Week 6 Journal

Beat 1) The first beat that I have chosen is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (or more specifically, Tom Brady breaking the all-time passing record this week). The reason that I have selected this as my topic is because of the history that this team is breaking right now. Not only has Tom Brady (the team's quarterback) just become the all-time leader in passing yards, but they are also the defending Super Bowl champions. Another interesting fact that makes this topic interesting is that Tom Brady broke the all-time passing record playing against his former team The Patriots.  Drop Quote: Tom Brady once said “Every quarterback can throw a ball; every running back can run; every receiver is fast, but that mental toughness that you talk about translates into competitiveness.”  Whammy: Tom Brady, the greatest football player of all time, has broken the all-time passing record tonight in his 22nd season playing in the NFL.  Rhetorical pivot and shift: Brady completes a pass to Mike Evans… The
