Fortnite: Chapter 3 Review

Fortnite: the only game on planet earth where Travis Scott, Ariana Grande, and The Rock can get into a gunfight with Spider-Man, Naruto, and The Master Chief. Although comical, many people still play the game! According to techacake.com the battle royale powerhouse currently has an active player base of over 80 million people.

If you are unfamiliar with Fortnite, it is a free-to-play, battle royale-style game. This means that 100 players are released onto an island via parachute. Once a player lands, their objective is to find a gun (or multiple, you can carry up to five) and fight till only one player or team remains. The game is also unique in that it features a building mechanic that allows players to gather resources, and use them to build cover, and engage in battle.

This week, Fortnite had a huge update bringing its chapter three content to the game. This content features a new map and guns. In this article, I will discuss my opinions regarding these things.

After spending a few hours playing Fortnite: Chapter Three, I feel the best place to start is the new map. Thewestnews.com states that the new Island is essentially just a flipped version of the old map with some modifications. I found the new map to be very enjoyable. Original locations such as Shifty Shafts and Greasy Grove have been reintroduced. As an avid player of the 2017 version of the game, I appreciate this very much. Also, according to thegamer.com, It has been rumored that the fan-favorite location Tilted Towers will be returning to the game in a few weeks.

It’s not just the reintroduction of old locations that makes this map awesome either. The addition of new drop spots such as “The Sanctuary” featuring an NPC version of Dwayne Johnson, and “The Daily Bugle”, which features themes from Spider-Man, add an element of newness to the game. Epic Games has given the island a much-needed facelift.

Although the new map gives to the Fortnite experience, the new guns take away from it. Let's start with the MK-7 assault rifle. Gamesradar.com states that the gun is a “mid-to-long range rifle, with a high rate of fire and a special red dot sight attached”. This gun is unique in that it allows you to aim down sights rather than shoot from the third person point of view. The MK-7 is incredibly fun to use, but it's a double-edged sword. What made the original Fortnite fun was its balance. Every gun was fair, which allowed for the player to create a unique loadout every game. This is not the case with the MK-7. This gun kills incredibly fast and is extremely deadly from close range. This makes it overpowered at the start of games.

The other “weapon” I would like to discuss is Spider-Man's web-shooters. This limited-time collaboration item allows the player using it to swing from buildings, trees, and other structures as if they were Spider-Man. According to republicworld.com, this item is found in backpacks that are scattered across the map. These backpacks always appear in the same spot, which makes them easy to find. If you find a backpack, you have a 90 percent chance of receiving it, meaning there are 18 web shooters in every Fortnite lobby. This is overkill. These types of items have been released into Fortnite before, but there was usually only one or two per game, making them hard to get. Because 18 of these items exist in every match, it seems that almost every player has one by the end of the game. This makes for a very frustrating experience. I do not think that the item itself is unbalanced, I simply believe there needs to be less of the item in the game.

All in all, Fortnite: Chapter Three is fun. The pros outweigh the cons. If you like competitive shooters, then I would recommend this game. I will be returning to play some more!
